PARENT-CHILD DEDICATION

Welcoming families into the faith.

“I prayed for this child, and the Lord has granted me what I asked of him. So now I give him to the Lord. For his whole life he will be given over to the Lord.”

-1 Samuel 1.27-28

When the time came for the purification rites required by the Law of Moses, Joseph and Mary took Jesus to Jerusalem to present him to the Lord.

-Luke 2.22

A child is an amazing blessing from God, a product of a man and a woman but ultimately a life given from the author of life. As an introduction of a child into the community of faith, parent-child dedication is an important statement for both parents and the church.

As parents bring their son or daughter before God, they acknowledge this amazing gift and commit to raising their child as a follower of Jesus. At the same time, the church acknowledges the parents’ commitment and agrees to join in helping the child learn and grow in the community of faith. Both the child and the parents are then anointed with oil as a sign and reminder of God’s grace covering over them in their journey of faith. Dedication is thus a beautiful sign of the beginning of a faith journey within the family of the church.
